Charles Larry Lear, 77, of Jupiter, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2018, at the West Palm Beach V.A. Medical Center, after a tough battle with cancer. Born in North Canton, Ohio to Wayne and Alice Lear, Charles lived his life between Ohio, California, Kentucky, the Caribbean Islands, and then settled in warm South Florida. Charles was a man of passion and drifted where the wind took him. He loved classic cars, music, sailing, and his family dearly. He left Ohio at a young age to follow his love of music and adventure in California. He was blessed to be close friends with the late Buddy Miles; the late Danny Whitten of Crazy Horse, and many other talented musicians of the time. He was drafted during the Vietnam Conflict and served his country in the Army, stationed at Fort Knox, KY. Once teaching himself to sail, he bought a sailboat in NY and sailed the East Coast down to the Caribbean. He Captained sailing charters and raced competitively in numerous sailing regattas and then set sail on a trans-atlantic trip to Europe. After all of his adventures, he settled in the warm weather of Palm Beach County where he has resided in Jupiter for a little over 30 years. He enjoyed going to his daughter's soccer games, riding his bike at the beach, and going to polo games and car shows in the area. Charles deeply loved all three of his children; his late son, Mike Elsass; his son, Kris Elsass of Massillon, OH., and his daughter, Alica Lear (Dillon) Cunningham of Jupiter. He is also survived by his longtime partner and newlywed wife, Jill Marshall of Jupiter; his older brother, James Lear of Canton, OH.; his niece, Linda; his nephews, Bob and Jimmy; his 4 grandchildren, April, Amber, Zac, and Jake; 5 great-grandchildren, as well as his great niece, nephews, and other family members and longtime friends. The family will be celebrating Charles' life with a short Military service at 1:00 PM Friday, February 2, 2018, at South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL 33449. All are welcome to attend. Please gather in Lane #1. Memorial donations, letters, or flowers can be sent to the family at: 801 Cayuga St. Jupiter, Fl 33458. All donations will be given together to the American Cancer Society on Charles' next birthday, November 14th. A special thank you to the entire VAMC staff in the infusion clinic, oncology, radiation clinic, the nurses and staff on Floor 6A and in the Hospice Center. Also, thank you to Dr. Silverman and Dr. Miller for the comfort and care you gave to Charles and to our family during this time. You are all angels. Thank You.
